1. To act as representative body of shippers to protect their common interest on shipping lines and conferences.

2. To monitor shipping services and maintain close contact with the shipping lines on a continuous basis as an apex body of shippers.

3. To bring together all shippers in various parts of Bangladesh on a common platform for discussion of various problems affecting the shippers with particular reference to export.

4. To protect the common interests of shippers vis-a-vis railway, inland water ways, port authorities etc on any major policy issues.

5. To collect information and statistics as required by the shippers and shipping lines from different agencies and circulate such information and statistical data for the use and benefit of shippers.

6. To provide for mutual consultations between shippers and ship owners /shipping conferences, port and other concerned authorities as well as government on matters of common interest.

7. To negotiate and enter into agreements with shipowners/shipping conferences and other concerned authorities on matters affecting shippers in the country.

8. To convene, independently or jointly with other organization, conferences, seminars or meetings on matters relating to transport and shipping for achieving the main objectives of the Council.

9. Represents the views of shippers to the concerned authorities and organization in regard to ocean freight rates and surcharges and other terms and conditions of shipping services, port charges, port facilities, internal transport by rail etc.

10. Act as the mediator in resolving conflicts amongst our members.

11. Facilitate a level playing field by developing and promoting a Code of Conduct/Ethics for our members.

12. Collects and circulates shipping intelligence and information regarding developments in shipping world as an active member of Asian Shippers’ Alliance (ASA) and Global Shippers’ Alliance (GSA).

13. It collects necessary trade information and statistical data from related agencies and publishes these in its magazine SHIPPERS’ NEWS for use by the shippers, Shipping Lines and transport operators.

14. Monitors ships’ schedules and resolved problems arising out of any changes in the declared schedules through mutual discussions.

15. Organizes joint meetings as and when necessary between the representatives of shipowners and shippers with a view to find out how the national flag carriers can serve the shippers better and how the shippers can give cargo support to national carriers in the overall national interest.

16. Resolves specific day to day problems faced by individual shippers in making shipment of their export cargoes in time.

17. Deals with matters relating to container shipment and container handling problems in close contact with port authorities and shipping lines, railways and shippers’.

18. Attends to enquiries from shippers, importers and exporters regarding ship’s programmes and space availability for their cargo etc.

19. Organizes workshops/seminars on different aspects of shipping independently to acquaint shippers and other concerned with shipping in matters relating to shipping techniques etc.
